Antimicrobial Characteristics

Antifungal Characteristics

Copper is also toxic to many fungi and yeasts. Studies show activity against:

  • Candida species
  • Aspergillus species
  • various environmental molds and fungal spores 

For our panels, this means:

  • Slower fungal colonization
  • Reduced spore viability on contact
  • Reduced surface biofilm growth
  • Suppression of fungal propagation in damp conditions

Copper is generally:

  • fungistatic first (suppresses growth),
  • and only sometimes fully fungicidal depending on exposure time and moisture.

So mold spores may still land on the surface, but they are less likely to establish a thriving colony.

Anti-Mold Characteristics

Copper-rich GRP is highly mold-resistant because mold requires:

  1. moisture,
  2. nutrients,
  3. stable surface adhesion.

Copper interferes with all three by:

  • damaging spores,
  • disrupting cell membranes,
  • generating reactive ions,
  • reducing viable biofilm formation.

Oxidation is normal

The surface will likely darken or patinate over time. This does not eliminate antimicrobial action.

Not self-cleaning

Copper surfaces reduce viable microbes but do not replace cleaning protocols. Organic buildup can shield microbes.
